Commissioner asks rich Nigerians to help communities

The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Kayode Opeifa, says those that have the means in the society should contribute to the development of their communities.

The commissioner said this while handing over a 600 KVA transformer he bought for the Oyewole/ Mulero Community of Orile-Agege area of Lagos.
Opeifa said the community needed the transformer after the one it was using got burnt.
He added that since the Power Holding Company of Nigeria had been privatised, the community was unable to get a new transformer as quickly as it wanted.
He said, “We all know that PHCN has been privatised and they said that the people should wait till September 2016.
“There was no other option than for the community members to contribute money. But since God has blessed us, we decided to relieve them and we have provided it.
“This community used to have one transformer which got burnt. Someone promised that he would get a new one from the electricity provider. However, we have provided it. And I know that the Lagos State Government has provided 15 transformers as well. People who are privileged should always be ready to lend a helping hand.”
Opeifa said he had also funded many empowerment programmes in the Orile-Agege area with a lot of residents benefitting from the gesture.
A House of Representative member, Dr. Samuel Adejare, commended Opeifa, noting that the people of Orile-Agege had always benefitted from poverty alleviation programmes initiated by their representatives in government.
The Chairman, Orile-Agege Community Development Committee, Alhaji Yusuf Agboola, said with the donation of the transformer, life had returned to the area.
He said, “Without electricity, there is little one can get from the economy. Residents depend on electricity for their daily activities. With what has been done, we will expect a boost in economic activities here.”
The Chairman, Muniru Ajasa Community Development Area, Alhaji Ajasa Korodo, added that the community had been on the transformer issue for about three months.
“Within that time, we visited Opeifa’s office to present our challenge to him and he assured us that he would do it and he has done it,” he added.
